Frozen Hotaru Ika 200 克

Known as Firefly Squid or Hotaru Ika, this fascinating sea creature illuminates the ocean with its captivating blue glow during spawning season in Japan. This luminescent display signifies the advent of spring and the arrival of this gourmet delicacy. Small in size, measuring between two to three inches, these petite squids are savored raw or can be marinated and grilled to enhance their flavor.

What does Hotaru Ika taste like?

Hotaru Ika presents a robust and briny flavor profile with a unique richness often likened to succulent shrimp. However, its taste stands in a league of its own and cannot be equated to any other seafood. For those wanting a gentle introduction to this squid variety, steaming it with dashi and serving over rice or pairing with a cucumber salad are excellent choices. For a full sensory experience, we recommend consuming Hotaru Ika whole to appreciate its diverse textures.
