Kukicha also known as twig or stem tea is a unique Japanese green tea made from the stems and twigs of the tea plant rather than just the leaves. Sourced from Shizuoka, Japan, it offers a naturally different character compared to traditional green teas.

 

Kukicha has a gentle, mellow flavor with soft nutty notes, a hint of herbs, and a subtle creamy finish. It’s also naturally lower in caffeine, making it a great option for evenings or for anyone looking for a lighter tea experience.

This tea is commonly produced during the making of sencha or matcha and is perfect for multiple infusions—typically 3 to 4 brews. Each cup stays smooth and slightly sweet, without bitterness.

 

In Japan, Kukicha is even used for ochazuke (tea over rice) thanks to its clean, delicate taste. Compared to sencha or gyokuro, it’s softer, milder, and very approachable—perfect for everyday drinking.
