THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE ALLEY

On that Mid-Autumn night years ago, the entire narrow alleyway lit up bright with a long procession of cellophane paper lanterns in every shape and color—star lanterns and carp lanterns blending with the rhythmic drumbeats of tùng dinh and ringing laughter following right behind the children's footsteps.

At the end of the alley, right on the front porch, Grandmother sat beside her old yellow lamp, reminding them, "No matter where you go, remember to come back for cake later." The kids shouted back a loud "Yes!" before eagerly running off again.

As years passed, the small alley changed, and those children grew into adults—some moved far away, while others haven't returned in a long time. Yet whenever they catch sight of a glowing light on a front porch, memories of that Mid-Autumn night rush back: remembering the soft drumbeats, the cellophane lanterns, the cheerful calls of childhood friends, and the silhouette of Grandmother waiting at the end of the lane. It all lives on as a green realm of memory, reminding us—amidst life's daily rush—to slow down and find joy in the smallest things. So that as the years go on, we always remember to leave a light on for one another, offer a gentle call home, and save a seat around a warm plate of cakes. For childhood memories are not meant merely to be remembered—they are the tender touch that helps us grow, teaching us how to love and how to be truly happy.
