- I ran out of black fungus at home, and after reading some good reviews for this brand, I decided to buy a pack to try. (I smelled it when I first opened the jar, and there was no strange smell.) Black fungus is a great ingredient, and it can be used in cold dishes in the summer. My most frequent dish is braised gluten (though the Jixiang brand is a bit hard to find), which absolutely requires black fungus. Adding a few slices to stir-fried pork with eggs is also good. Hot and sour soup and the assorted vegetables often eaten during Chinese New Year also require black fungus, so it's an essential ingredient in most households.
