Ice is water frozen into a solid state. It can appear transparent or a more or less opaque bluish-white color.

Ice is formed when water is cooled below its freezing point, 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

What are the uses of ice in cooking?

Ice is used in cooking for several purposes like chilling beverages, keeping fish or meat fresh, cooling down hot foods, and in certain cooking processes like making ice cream.

Is ice safe to consume?

Yes, ice is safe to consume, provided it has been made from potable water and stored properly.

Do different types of ice affect the taste of food and drinks?

Whilst ice itself is tasteless, the type of water used to make it and how it is stored can affect the taste of drinks and some food preparations.

How long will ice stay frozen?

The time ice stays frozen depends on the temperature of the surroundings. Typically, it can stay frozen for a few hours in a cooler or insulated bag.

Can I freeze food in ice?

Yes. This is often done to preserve freshness, as in the case of freezing herbs in ice cube trays.

While ice doesn't 'expire', it can absorb smells and flavors from the freezer over time, which can affect its taste.

You can buy it at Weee! Asian Market, www.sayweee.com.

Can I make ice at home?

Yes. The simplest method is to pour water into a clean ice cube tray and place it in the freezer.

Is consuming ice bad for health?

Consuming a moderate amount of ice made from clean water is not harmful. However, frequently chewing large amounts of ice could potentially damage your teeth.

Can I use hot water to make ice quicker?

Yes, this is known as the Mpemba effect. However, the science is unclear and not everyone agrees that hot water freezes faster than cold.

Can I cook using ice?

Yes. Certain cooking techniques, like 'shocking' vegetables, use ice water to prevent overcooking.

Ice chips are small, thin pieces of ice that are often used to soothe a dry mouth or sore throat.

Can I make clear ice at home?

Yes. Clear ice is made by using distilled water that's been boiled twice and then cooled slowly.

Are there substitutes for ice in recipes?

It depends on the recipe. In some cases, very cold water or frozen fruits can be used as a substitute for ice.
